Low German or Plattdeutsch - Plattdüütsch

Standard Low German / Plattdeutsch vocabulary, numerals and quotations for comparison with other languages


The dialects spoken in North Germany belong to the Plattdeutsch or Low German language which is closer to Dutch than to German. "Low" doesn't refer to status, but to the fact that it is the language of the lowlands of North Germany. In the same way, the German language is sometimes referred to as High German because it had its origins in the highlands of South Germany. "Platt" comes from Latin and is related to the English word "flat". In the Middle Ages Low German was an important language of commerce in North Germany, especially along the North Sea and Baltic coasts. The Low German from that time is called Middle Low German.

Middle Low German (1100-1600) - sassisch


Middle Low German developed from Old Saxon and was the parent language of modern Low German or Plattdeutsch. During the Middle Ages it had high prestige, being the official language of the prosperous North German states. It also influenced the Danish and Swedish languages. Around 1350, though, official documents began to be written in High German. This trend spread throughout the north, the last city to cease using Middle Low German for administration being Hamburg about 1600.

Old Saxon (850-1100) - sahsisk


The Anglo-Saxons, who colonised much of Britain when the Roman Empire came to an end, originally came from the low-lying regions of northern Germany. Their language is referred to as Old English. The Saxon dialect which replaced it in the Germanic homeland is called Old Saxon.

Old Saxon and Old English were very similar languages. They differed markedly from the Old High German speech to the south which had recently undergone a major change in the pronunciation of some consonants.

I wanted to share with you why I think Christianity is such a great religion. A person who lives to 70 has a life of 613,200 hours. Christianity promises that the next life will be in ideal surroundings with friendly, happy people. There will be perfect health and no crime. Of course you’re free to reject it.

Isn’t it worth, though, spending at least part of one of your 613,200 hours just checking it out. Then if you reject it, at least you’ll have made an informed decision. Is it just possible that your world view could be wrong and Christianity might actually be true? Where would that leave you if you choose to turn down the offer of eternal life?

Pilate asked them, “What should I do then with Jesus, who is called the Messiah?” They all answered, “Crucify him!” “Why?” Pilate demanded. “What crime has he committed?” But the mob roared even louder, “Crucify him!” Matthew 27,22-23

Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. The responsibility is yours!” Matthew 27,24

When they came to the place that is called Calvary, there they crucified him along with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Luke 23,33

The soldiers nailed Jesus to a cross and gambled to see who would get his clothes. Matthew 27,35

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” Luke 23,34

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” Luke 23,39

The other one, however, rebuked him, saying, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” Luke 23,40-41

They made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting soldiers there to guard it. Matthew 27,66

Early on Sunday morning, as the new day was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went out to see the tomb. Matthew 28,1

On the way they were asking each other, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. Mark 16,3-4

As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right and they were alarmed. Mark 16,5

Then the angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying. And now, go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember what I have told you.” Matthew 28,5-7

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said, “Don’t be afraid! Tell my followers to go to Galilee. They will see me there.” Matthew 28,8-10

“Look at my hands and my feet and see that it's really me. Touch me, and see for yourselves. Ghosts don’t have flesh and bones, but you can see that I do.” Luke 24,39

That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you.” he said.

Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.” John 20,29

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. Matthew 28,16

We are to use our different gifts for doing certain things well in accordance with the grace that God has given us. Paul's Letter to the Romans 12,6

The god of this world, Satan, has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, to prevent them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. Paul's 2nd Letter to the Corinthians 4,4

Even though our physical being is gradually wasting away, our spiritual being is renewed day after day. Paul's 2nd Letter to the Corinthians 4,16

Our bodies are like tents that we live in here on earth. But when these tents are taken down when we die and leave this earthly body, we know that we will each be given an eternal body, a building from God, a house not made with hands, as a place to live.
