Breton - brezhoneg


Breton is named after the land where it originated, Britain. While the Anglo-Saxon tribes were settling in southern Britain in the 5th century, some of the Celtic-speaking Britons stayed where they were, learned to speak Old English and were absorbed into the English culture. Others moved west to the moors of Devon and Cornwall and the mountains of Wales. Some of those living on the south coast took to their boats, sailed across to Celtic- and Latin-speaking Gaul and continued their Celtic lifestyle in what was to become Brittany. Because Brittany is nearer to Cornwall than to Wales, the Breton language is more similar to Cornish than to Welsh.
