Spanish - español


The most obvious difference between the Spanish of Spain and the Spanish of Latin America is the pronunciation of c before e or i and also the pronunciation of z. In Spain cecina (a type of meat) is pronounced thetheena (with th as in thin) and pez (fish) is pronounced peth. The explanation is a bit of a mystery, but there used to be a legend that a Spanish king in olden times had a lisp that resulted in him pronouncing ciento (a hundred) as thiento and caza (hunting) as catha. The people around him, wishing to flatter him, copied his way of speaking and soon it became the standard pronunciation in Spain. The problem is, if he could only pronounce caza as catha, how was he able to pronounce casa (house) with a s? If he lisped ciento, why didn't he lisp siento (I feel)?
