Guernsey French - Guernésiais
When Normandy conquered England in 1066 the Norman dialect of French replaced Old English as the language of government. It remained the language of prestige in England until about 1400. Norman French differed from Parisian French in several ways. For instance:- werre (Norman), guerre (Parisian) war; pouquette (N), poche (P) pocket; caundele (N), chandelle (P) candle; gardin (N), jardin (P) garden. The French spoken in the Channel Islands is descended from the Norman French language of the Middle Ages, not from the French of Paris.
