Occitan - occitan

With the end of the Roman Empire the Latin of Gaul developed in two different ways. In the north, under the influence of Germanic Frankish dialects, it became the Langue d'Oïl and in the south it evolved into the Langue d'Oc, oïl and oc being the respective words for yes. During the Middle Ages both produced great literature, especially poetry. The central dialect of the Langue d'Oïl became the French language. Today the word Occitan can mean the southern language in general, or more specifically, as in this website, the central dialect, with Gascon being to the west, Auvergnat to the north and Provençal to the east. The Aranese of the Pyrenees valley Val d'Aran is the southernmost form of Gascon.
