North Frisian of Niebüll (East Mooring) - frasch


This dialect of North Frisian is often used as the standard for the mainland dialects. After the migration of Angles, Saxons and Jutes to Britain in the 5th century, the Frisian language gained dominance along the North Sea coast in an almost continuous band from the Rhine Estuary to Denmark. Over the following centuries differences developed between the dialects of Old Frisian. These evolved into the early forms of West Frisian, East Frisian and North Frisian. A series of catastrophic North Sea floods between 1362 and 1634 changed the north coastal district into a series of islands (Rømø, Sylt, Föhr, Amrum, Pellworm and Nordstrand). Helgoland, previously the size of Föhr and about 7 miles off the coast, became a much smaller island separated from the mainland by about 35 miles of sea. Fundamental differences in vocabulary and placenames suggest to some scholars that the island dialects are from the original North Frisian, while the mainland dialects were brought by immigrants from further south.
