Proto-Slavic (1500 BC-600 AD)

By about 1500 BC the Proto-Slavic and the Proto-Baltic languages had begun to develop in different directions. From then onwards changes in the language took place extremely slowly. It wasn’t until about 600 AD that the Proto-Slavic language started to split into three parts, West Slavonic, East Slavonic and South Slavonic. During the following centuries these separated into such languages as Polish, Czech, Slovak (West Slavonic languages), Russian, Belarusian, Ukrainian (East Slavonic languages), Slovene, Croatian, Serbian, Macedonian and Bulgarian (South Slavonic languages).
