Traditional Dialect of Shetland
This was the dialect of the Shetland Isles. Until 1472 they belonged to Norway and the local language was a dialect of Old Norwegian called Norn. By 1800 it had mostly been replaced by the Scots dialect of the mainland and the last speaker of Shetland Norn, Walter Sutherland, died about 1850.
