Traditional Dialect of Norfolk
In early Anglo-Saxon times, before 794 AD, East Anglia was an independent kingdom, consisting of the North Folk and the South Folk. This was the origin of the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk. To the south of East Anglia the kingdom of the East Saxons remained independent until 825 AD. This later became the county of Essex. The dialects of the three counties were similar until the mid 20th Century, by which time the traditional dialect of southern Essex was being replaced by a form of the London accent, Estuary English.
