Italian - italiano

Standard Italian vocabulary, numerals and quotations for comparison with other languages

Italian, Sardinian and Romanian are the modern Romance languages closest to Latin. Sardinian pronunciation preserves older Latin features that have been lost in the other Romance languages. Romanian grammar distinguishes three genders, masculine, feminine and neuter, and three cases, nominative/accusative, vocative and genitive/dative. Italian is the language spoken in the Latin homeland, Italy. In 1,500 years or so, the words used have changed remarkably little, especially the feminine ones. The pronunciation has changed somewhat, but not as much as in some of the other Romance languages. Italian has supplied many words to other languages, especially in the field of music and food. Italian words in English include tempo, trio, solo, soprano, concerto, piano, sonata, inferno, vendetta, malaria, volcano, casino, studio, broccoli, macaroni, spaghetti and umbrella.

Perché Dio ha tanto amato il mondo, che ha dato il suo unigenito Figlio, affinché chiunque crede in lui non perisca, ma abbia vita eterna.

For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3,16

1 Non giudicate, acciocché non siate giudicati; 2 perché col giudicio col quale giudicate, sarete giudicati; e con la misura onde misurate, sarà misurato a voi.

1 Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged. 2 For you will be judged by the same standard with which you judge others, and you will be measured by the same measure you use. Matthew 7

Tutte le cose dunque che voi volete che gli uomini vi facciano, fatele anche voi a loro.

In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you Matthew 7,12

9 Padre nostro che sei nei cieli, sia santificato il tuo nome; venga il tuo regno, 10 sia fatta la tua volontà, come in cielo così in terra. 11 Dacci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano, 12 rimetti a noi i nostri debiti, come noi li rimettiamo ai nostri debitori 13 e non ci indurre in tentazione, ma liberaci dal male.

9 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Matthew 6

I wanted to share with you why I think Christianity is such a great religion. A person who lives to 70 has a life of 613,200 hours. Christianity promises that the next life will be in ideal surroundings with friendly, happy people. There will be perfect health and no crime. Of course you’re free to reject it.

Isn’t it worth, though, spending at least part of one of your 613,200 hours just checking it out. Then if you reject it, at least you’ll have made an informed decision. Is it just possible that your world view could be wrong and Christianity might actually be true? Where would that leave you if you choose to turn down the offer of eternal life?
