The languages most closely related to Corsican are Italian, Sicilian and Neapolitan (Naples). Corsica was part of the Republic of Genoa until 1768. The prestige language of the island was Italian. Then Genoa sold Corsica to France and, after considerable bloodshed, the prestige language became French. Meanwhile the Corsican language endured.
