Aranese - aranés

To the west of Andorra in the Pyrenees lies the Val d'Aran, the Aran Valley. It is on the northern side of the mountains and the river flows northwards into France. The local dialect is the southern form of Gascon. The language to the south of the Pyrenees at this point is Catalan. For historical reasons, though, the Val d'Aran is not in France, but is part of Spain. In France Gascon is not an official language, but in this valley on the Spanish side of the border it is. Here it is called Aranese.
