A proverb is a short saying, stating a general truth or piece of advice. The book of Proverbs in the Old Testament has hundreds of these thought-provoking sayings. Twenty of its chapters are the words of Solomon, the son of King David of Israel, to whom God gave the gift of wisdom and a discerning heart to distinguish between right and wrong.
Here are some proverbs which may be of help to you.
- Chapter 2 verses 2/3: Listen to what is wise and try to understand it. Yes, beg for knowledge; plead for insight.
- Chapter 3 verse 6: Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know.
- Chapter 3 verse 28: Never tell your neighbours to wait until tomorrow if you can help them now.
- Chapter 4 verses 6/7: Do not abandon wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will keep you safe. Getting wisdom is the most important thing you can do.
- Chapter 4 verse 24: Never say anything that isn't true. Have nothing to do with lies and misleading words.
- Chapter 4 verse 27: Avoid evil and walk straight ahead. Don't go one step off the right way.
- Chapter 10 verse 32: Righteous people know the kind thing to say, but the wicked are always saying things that hurt.
- Chapter 12 verse 15: Stupid people always think they are right. Wise people listen to advice.
- Chapter 13 verse 16: Sensible people always think before they act, but stupid people advertise their ignorance.
- Chapter 18 verse 14: Your will to live can sustain you when you are sick.
- Chapter 21 verse 2: You may think that everything you do is right, but remember that the Lord judges your motives.
- Chapter 27 verse 12: Sensible people will see trouble coming and avoid it, but an unthinking person will walk right into it and regret it later.
Wisdom and knowledge are not necessarily the same thing. Wisdom is knowing not just the facts, but what to do in the various situations of life. Ask God to make you a wise person!
